Kyle O'Reilly def. NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata (Non-title)
While I am not overly familiar with the Japanese wrestling scene, I have seen plenty of Shibata from his various matches in Ring of Honor this year to know just how excellent he is in the ring. His style meshed perfectly with O'Reilly's, resulting in a highly physical and hard-hitting match. Although Bobby Fish is O'Reilly's tag team partner, I'm not sure what purpose he served on commentary, but he was good and ultimately added to the match, so I can't complain. The finished was rather abrupt and seemed to come out of nowhere, but it was the referee who called for the bell, so Shibata never technically tapped out.
ROH World Champion Adam Cole def. Jay Lethal, Tetsuya Naito and Hiroshi Tanahashi in a Four Corner Survival Match
Sure, the ending outcome was never in doubt due to how this was taped a while ago, but I enjoyed this match for its great in-ring action and not its predictability. It wasn't as fast-paced as I expected it to be for a four-way and felt more like a tag team match with only two people in the ring at the same time, but the second half was very well-wrestled and everyone had their time to shine. I especially liked the brief interactions between Lethal and Naito given their recent feud and Cole being the tremendous heel he is. And lest we forget Tanahashi's awesomeness as well. The finishing sequence was fantastic and Lethal was protected in defeat with Naito costing him the championship. By the way, how sweet was that superkick from Cole?!
MCU Park may not have been packed to the gills, but it was still pretty full and the crowd was lively, which is all that matters. ROH aired several matches from their Field of Honor show both last week and this week to kill time before the latest set of tapings air, which I surely hope is next week, and I can appreciate that the footage isn't that old and both matches were entertaining. Still, I'm looking forward to the fallout from All Star Extravaganza.
