Back in 2006, former WWE Champions Randy Orton and Edge formed a team and decided to go after DX and the WWE World Tag Team Championships. They beat Ric Flair and Roddy Piper for the championships and lost them to John Cena & Shawn Michaels a few months later. Both guys were seen as top tier talent but with WWE champion John Cena busy with the other champions on SmackDown and ECW it was a perfect time to have Orton & Edge team. They had great matches with DX and had some funny segments. They only lasted 7 months but it was a good spot for them to keep busy while not contending for the WWE Championship.
Last week on Monday Night Raw, it was teased that Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens would be teaming up against Enzo & Cass. Owens & Jericho have teamed before and were great together. Owens has thrived since being called up to the main roster but he has already been a 2 time Intercontinental champion and the main event scene is packed. Jericho is a veteran and won’t be contending for singles gold any time soon. With SummerSlam in two weeks they still haven’t announced a WWE tag team title match. Early predictions would be The New Day defending vs. The Club but the WWE would be smart to add Enzo & Cass and Owens & Jericho.
As singles heels they are perfect but adding them together will be money. I don’t see them as a long term team but as a random team of two Superstars they can stay busy and out of singles gold contention. Imagine this: Enzo & Cass about to win the tag titles at SummerSlam in Brooklyn and when Enzo goes for the big splash he is hit with a Codebreaker. Owens & Jericho would be showered with boos for upsetting the hometown team and winning the titles. They could drop the titles a month later but having them win tag team gold would be great.
Like I stated previously this makeshift team can be the 2016 version of Rated-RKO and not be off WWE TV or being used in pointless matches. Owens & Jericho will be great and should be a very entertaining duo and you can’t teach that!
