Actions speak louder than words. While most people think the first ever screwjob was the Montréal Screwjob, this really was it. This event took place back in 1985. It was a screwjob no one saw coming and it stunned many people around the world. This is known as the “Original Screwjob”.
This match was advertised as Wendi Richter vs. The Spider Lady for the Women's Championship at first. But this was all a plan by The Fabulous Moolah and Vince McMahon. This was done because current reigning champion Wendi’s relationship had soured over the month. Vince also stated for his reasoning to screw Wendi over was because she did not sign a contract. Despite claiming she did not re-sign, she said she was on a five year contract. Vince feared that Wendi would leave the company along with the champion.
The scenario played as The Fabulous Moolah using a disguise. She went under the name of Spider Lady. When they had the match, Spider Lady went for a small package, the ref (unknown at the time and was in on the plan) counted three really fast despite Wendi kicking out. Wendi continued to attack Spider and she unmasked the new champion The Fabulous Moolah.
It was reported that Wendi saw Moolah at the event prior to the show. She was surprised to see her because she never saw Moolah at events. After the match, an infuriated Richter left the arena in her wrestling gear, took a cab to the airport, and booked herself on a flight out of New York. Afterward, she never spoke to Moolah again.
