Apollo Crews def. Elias Sampson
Yes, Sampson generated heat during his pre-match promo and singing routine, but I would argue that was the wrong type of heat. They weren't booing him because they love to hate him. Rather, they wanted wrestling, as they chanted, and not a stupid gimmick. The match itself wasn't anything special and the crowd started to lose interest toward the end, but at least they were solidly behind Crews throughout. As I might have noted in my NXT TakeOver: Dallas review from last Friday, I'm very glad this was cut from the card since it would have been the one blemish on the star-studded lineup. Crews is on to bigger and better things anyway, so I'm excited to see how he fares on Raw even though I would have been fine with him sticking around in NXT for a little while longer.
I read at one point last week that the matches taped at WrestleMania Axxess on Saturday would air on this episode, but apparently those are being saved for next week since Austin Aries and Shinsuke Nakamura were advertised at the end. Instead, we were treated to Crews vs. Sampson (which was taped prior to TakeOver), the highlights of TakeOver, and reactions from wrestlers that were already posted on WWE's YouTube channel. In short, this wasn't a must-see show by any means and the match wasn't worth seeking out. If anything, I'd recommend going back and watching TakeOver in full because it was that amazing of an event. I look forward to what the future of NXT has in store.
