By RJ Marceau When Graham texted me last week about the news that Roman Reigns was suspended I didn’t believe it. I was at work and jumped on the internet and saw the breaking news of the suspension. Initially I laughed just thinking of how mad Vince McMahon must have been when he found out that “The Guy” failed the WWE Wellness policy. This suspension was huge especially for the WWE since they are pushing Reigns to be the next top babyface of either Raw or SmackDown with the upcoming brand split. When the reports came out that the WWE knew of the suspension before Money in the Bank I wasn’t surprised they had Reigns lose clean for the first time on the main roster. However, them keeping him in the main event for Battleground was very puzzling. Why would the WWE reward him after being suspended for a month by keeping him in the title match? It’s also odd that they would have “The Shield” Triple threat at Battleground of all PPVs. I’m assuming that with the upcoming WWE Draft that the three former Shield members will be drafted to different shows and it won’t happen soon. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Kyle O'Reilly def. Kamaitachi Kamaitachi's name sounded familiar to me for some reason, and then I realized I watched him wrestle live and even met him just last month at a Northeast Wrestling event. Other than that one interaction, though, I know nothing about the guy aside from him being an excellent athlete because he wasn't established at all on ROH programming. He meshed well with O'Reilly and they produced a very good opening pay-per-view opener despite not having any storyline support behind it. By the way, and maybe I missed something, but at what point did O'Reilly earn another shot at the ROH World Championship? I don't ever recall that being mentioned on ROH TV in recent weeks. ACH def. Silas Young I really like the premise of this program with it being a clash of generations. As characters, ACH and Young are polar opposites similar to how Young and Dalton Caste were, and that was a fantastic feud. The crowd was quiet for a majority of the match, but I blame that more on a lousy atmosphere/audience than the workrate of the wrestlers. They told a different story than the previous match with ACH refusing to give in to Young's punishment, but it was befitting of the feud. Hopefully ROH will capitalize off ACH's big win here by continuing to push him as a singles star going forward. By Graham "GSM" Matthews The Golden Truth def. The Ascension Thankfully for Viktor, Konnor has finally returned from serving his 60 day suspension, so he can now go back to jobbing in tag team action as opposed to singles competition. In all seriousness, this was fine for what it was. The Ascension are hardly a threat, but they were decent foils for R-Truth and Goldust. As unbearable of a tandem as they are to me, some crowds have surprisingly taken a liking to The Golden Truth, if only the children. Thus, at least the crowd didn't sit on their hands the entire time and were somewhat lively. The Lucha Dragons def. The Dudley Boyz This was on the same level as their match on the Money in the Bank Kickoff show in that it was well-wrestled and The Dudley Boyz effectively elicited heat from the audience by teasing them with tables only to not deliver. It's a shame WWE isn't doing more with them at the moment, but I respect them for coming back and putting over the younger talent. I wouldn't be surprised if they got split up in the upcoming Draft, but I'd love to see them as tag team champs one last time before they officially part ways. |
