By Graham "GSM" Matthews United States Champion John Cena def. WWE Tag Team Champion Xavier Woods by Disqualification I appreciated the opener last week with The Wyatt Family kicking off the show and they continued the trend this week with the U.S. Open. I liked the interaction between Cena and The New Day because it was something fresh and New Day are entertaining as all hell, but did anyone honestly think Xavier Woods had a chance of beating Cena for the belt? If you told me years ago that TNA's Consequences Creed would be facing Cena for a title on Raw, I would have called you crazy. It was a decent match while it lasted, but it barely lived up to its full potential before it ended in a disqualification, setting up the subsequent six-man tag team match. WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day def. United States Champion John Cena and The Dudley Boyz I don't know about anyone else, but it was pretty surreal to see The Dudley Boyz and Cena sharing the same ring for the first time in over a decade. It was a pretty standard six-man tag team match for the most part, but it was well-wrestled, so no complaints. I had my money (no, not literally) on Dudley Boyz winning to build momentum for their title match at the MSG special on Saturday, but New Day picking up the victory was a pleasant surprise. Dose this mean the Dudleys win the belts before Hell in a Cell?

By Graham "GSM" Matthews #AskGSM is a weekly Q&A video where I, Graham "GSM" Matthews, answer fan questions from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in regards to the world of wrestling. Nothing is off limits, and this week’s edition touches upon a variety of topics including:
By Graham "GSM" Matthews R-Truth def. Heath Slater Another week, another R-Truth match. Sigh. It has nothing to do with him, it has all to do with WWE having him compete against the same people every week, and this felt like a glorified house show match. Perhaps the most entertaining part of the match came when Xavier Woods said on commentary that because Slater owns a victory over Seth Rollins from last year, he deserves a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Does that mean everyone who beat Rollins before he became champ deserves a title opportunity? No, it had absolutely nothing to do with the match itself, but I found it funny. Jack Swagger def. Adam Rose I fully expected this to be a quick throwaway match with Swagger disposing of Rose within minutes, but it was much more competitive than I thought it would be. The match wasn't half-bad, either, and I liked the finish with Swagger locking in the Patriot Lock out of nowhere on Rose. Once again, however, Woods was the star of the match on commentary by talking about poop the entire time. If you don't think that's Vince McMahon telling him (and Rose) to say that constantly, you're out of your mind. By Graham "GSM" Matthews WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins Interrupted Kane I wasn't sold on Kane playing mind games with Rollins at first, but I've grown to love it since Raw. Kane acts extremely enthusiastic when he's the Director of Operations and it's so much better than his draining promos from when he was a boring heel. I'm typically not a fan of long talking segments to open shows, but he had an enjoyable exchange with Rollins on the mic here that set the stage for the night's main event between Rollins and Dean Ambrose. Roman Reigns def. Luke Harper Harper and Reigns have always worked well against each other and this was no exception. They seemed to skip over first gear and go straight into the finishing sequence (meaning the match was rushed), but I enjoyed it. The ban on interference ensured a clean fight and the brawl between the two was fun while it lasted. Reigns was the obvious victor, but Harper looked good in defeat by putting forth a strong effort against Reigns. |
