By Graham "GSM" Matthews Dixie Carter Called Out Eric Young; Chris Melendez def. Young in a Lumberjack Match It's about time they started making a big deal about Bound for Glory in a few weeks. Yes, the build to the show should have started sooner, but better late than never, I guess. The announcement of the No. 1 Contender's match in the main event was well done and the transition into Young's match with Melendez was also nice. Young has morphed into the quintessential heel these past few months and this was great work from him on the mic. I loved his logic that he had an "iron clad" contract, and quite frankly, that was the only excuse he had from getting fired in storyline. I haven't been the biggest proponent of the Young-Melendez feud since it started, and even through this isn't saying much, this was their best bout to date and I'm glad it appears to have finally reached its end. My only question is, why wasn't this saved for Bound for Glory in two weeks? Knockouts Champion Gail Kim def. Jade They worked a well-wrestled match in the time they were allotted, but I imagine they could have an even better match if Jade meant more and wasn't cast as one of the whipping girls for Taryn Terrell. I was surprised by the amount of offense she got in against Kim, but I enjoyed the match, nevertheless. I liked the show of respect from Awesome Kong after the match and I'm excited to see them clash for the title at Bound for Glory. Hopefully they can play off their storied history on next week's go-home show and give it the special feel it deserves.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews Eva Marie def. Carmella Whose bright idea was it to put these two in the ring together again? It was bad enough they faced off a few weeks ago in Brooklyn and there was no need to hold a rematch. Yes, I commend Eva for her improvement, but it's hard for her not to improve considering how horrendous she was before. Putting her up against equally green workers aren't going to help her cause, either. Worse yet, the camera didn't catch Eva's foot on the rope the first time, and the finish came off terribly with Carmella falling to the outside and getting counted out. Not exactly the best way of kicking off the show. Tyler Breeze def. Bull Dempsey Breeze and Dempsey obviously have two very different in-ring styles, but they managed to produce a decent match with plenty of back-and-forth action. The Bullfit gimmick is quickly getting over, so at least the crowd is invested in both characters. Furthermore, I liked the finish that saw Breeze put his feet on the ropes to pick up the win. It puts heat on Breeze, protects Dempsey and keeps the feud alive, so it was well-done. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Michael Elgin def. Silas Young The crowd was thoroughly behind Elgin throughout the bout, something that hasn't been the case for him in the past when I've watched him wrestle. He's always been an excellent athlete, but he had a problem at one point connecting with the crowd, but it looks like he's overcome that as of late. Prior to All Star Extravaganza, he was a heel the last televised match I watched him work, so when he did he turn babyface? Or was he a heel here? That aside, he and Young worked a hard-hitting matchup, but both guys should have been protected, so it would have helped it Elgin went up against something who could have taken the loss. This was taped before the PPV last weekend, hence why Young didn't have Dalton Castle's "boys" with him. ACH def. Caprice Coleman This was another match that had weird character development. To my knowledge, both ACH and Coleman are babyfaces, so the crowd didn't have any incentive to cheer for one guy over the other. That said, the crowd reacted to many of the big moves and appreciated the competitiveness of the contest. There wasn't anything in the way of storyline significance during this match, but the post-match interview between Steve Corino and Coleman referencing the letter Coleman received last week was interesting. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Team B.A.D. def. Team Bella After a good Divas Championship match at Night of Champions and a great heel turn from Paige on Raw, we were back to the tired "faction wars" on this show. Ugh. Don't get me wrong, the match was well-wrestled and everyone played their part well, but I'd be lying if I said I cared about who won. Worse yet, it was a match pitting two heel factions against each other! Who the hell was the crowd supposed to cheer for? It's the little things like that, that bother me the most and I'm hoping both of these trios are on the verge of splitting up because the exchanging of victories does nothing for me. Stardust def. R-Truth I'm not sure if I'm in the minority in saying this, but I don't mind the trio of Stardust and The Ascension at all. They make for a cool unit and it definitely adds something to each of the acts involved. Truth is a glorified enhancement wrestler at this point, so the ending outcome was never in doubt, but it was a nice win for Stardust and I liked how he used The Ascension to his advantage by distracting Truth before picking up the win. |
