Seth Rollins and United States Champion Roman Reigns Interrupted Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon I feared the worst when Stephanie returned and I thought we were in for another 20 minute tirade until the babyfaces came out to interrupt her. Thankfully, she only got one savage dig in at CM Punk fans by mocking his UFC debut. Was it necessary? No, but it shut Chicago up pretty quick. This was a pretty paint-by-numbers otherwise and set up the night's two biggest matches just fine. The crowd was hot for Rollins as expected and booed the hell out of Reigns, also as expected. The teases for a Shield reunion have been much more frequent as of late. Could we see them get back together again during the Royal Rumble match (on the off-chance Reigns competes)? Raw Tag Team Champions Cesaro and Sheamus def. The New Day I was surprised they blew off the tag title rematch so soon because this seems to be the only feud Raw's tag division has to offer at the moment. Granted, they're both babyface tandems and we've seen the match a million times before, but there's no denying they work well together. Similar to Roadblock, they contested a highly entertaining match and Cesaro continues to impress. It will be interesting to see if New Day remain in chase mode going forward or if they are totally done with the tag team scene for now. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Goldust def. Curtis Axel Axel appeared to be a babyface for a few months, but from what Tom Phillips said during this match, the audience just wasn't embracing him, so he's apparently now a heel again. Or maybe it's just a one-week deal. Oh, who the hell cares. This match was technically sound, but utlimately nothing too special. Axel is just damaged goods at this point, and it's a shame Goldust isn't being used better in the twilight of his career. This wasn't a very memorable match, but at least it was well-wrestled. Tony Nese def. Lince Dorado According to WWE, the Cruiserweights are exclusive to Raw. And 205 Live. And Main Event. And sometimes NXT. Maybe they should look up the definition of the word "exclusive." At any rate, this was a pretty fun match, but Nese and Dorado have suffered from a serious lack of character development since the launch of the Cruiserweight division. I'm not even sure what's supposed to make Nese a heel other than his brief trash talking during his matches. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Billie Kay def. Daria Berenato So, I guess Berenato is a babyface now? Just because Kay and Peyton Royce turned on her? Whatever. I still do think she has potential, though, and she had a far better outing here than she did in Toronto last month. Her MMA gimmick is unique and it's what she knows, but it was a bit too over-the-top in this contest, so I hope she tones it down in the future. I assumed Nikki Cross would be Asuka's next title challenger, but Kay and Royce throwing their names into the hat was interesting considering they don't feel like true threats right now. The Authors of Pain def. John Ortagun and Anthony Bowens Although this was yet another standard squash match from The Authors of Pain, it was quicker than usual due to one of their opponents getting hurt pretty badly on that move where they powerbomb their opponents on top of each other. I haven't heard an update on him since the injury occurred, so I hope he's okay. As for Authors of Pain, this was a straightforward match to help further their momentum heading into the tag title match at TakeOver: San Antonio. |
