Aerostar def. Drago For an Ancient Aztec Medallion
I completely forgot these two and Fenix teamed up in last year's Trios Tournament until Dario Cueto brought it up. Man, I absolutely love the storyline consistency in Lucha Underground. This match may not have been too great depending on how high your expectations were, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. They worked well together and it's a lot easier to get invested in the medallion matches this season now knowing what's at stake (a shot at the Gift of the Gods Championship). I was surprised to see Drago lose so decisively if only because we know a lot less about Aerostar. Hopefully there's more to come with his character, and more importantly, hopefully we haven't seen the end of his feud with Jack Evans.
Fenix, PJ Black and Jack Evans def. The Disciples of Death in a Trios Tournament First Round Match
Evans is so damn entertaining, Black is an amazing athlete and Fenix is fun to watch. Together, they're the perfect trio. It's a shame their opponents were The Disciples of Death because they've never done anything for me personally, but if nothing else, they held their own just fine. Fenix, Black and Evans shined here and with each man having a stellar showing. This was one instance where I was happy the makeshift team advanced over the regular team because The Disciples of Death have zero credibility. They appear to be done now based off the backstage segment and how two of them were killed off, so that was reassuring to see.
Lucha Underground Champion Matanza Cueto vs. Mil Muertes Went to a No Contest
Matanza's last few outings, especially in singles competition, have been less-than-stellar, so I had my guard up here for a mediocre match. However, it ultimately exceeded my expectations. Not in that it was an incredible in-ring classic, but they worked well within their limits, executed an awesome-looking spot on top of Dario's office (or one of those vacant rooms, I'm not sure), and kept the feud alive. Matanza has been running through the roster during his reign as champion, so it would have been asinine for him to beat Muertes so quickly. I'm glad we'll be getting more matches from them. Even cooler, Catrina and Dario have something brewing as well, potentially over control of the temple. I can't wait to see how that plays out!
You can rarely go wrong with Lucha Underground and this episode was no exception. It was a highly enjoyable hour of wrestling on the whole with a solid opening match (that served a purpose), a blast of a six-man tag team match, and an excellent ending. Matanza hasn't been lighting the world on fire as champion, but even when he isn't delivering in the main event, there are plenty of undercard stories to look forward to, including Cage in a cage next week against Johnny Mundo! Bring it on!
