Lucha Underground Review - June 22, 2016

Picture
By Graham "GSM" Matthews

Daga def. Mascarita Sagrada For an Ancient Aztec Medallion

Other than his strange storyline with Kobra Moon, viewers haven't been given any real reason to care about Daga, which is a shame because he's a terrific wrestler. He's almost Lucha Underground's equilvent to WWE's Neville in that way in my mind. Nevertheless, he and Sagrada contested a fun little match (no pun intended) and Sagrada continues to win over the audience. This oddball pairing with Famous B has done wonders for him, and while I'm sad to see it end abruptly, they could have an enjoyable match at Ultima Lucha 2 if that's the direction they're headed in.

Marty "The Moth" Martinez, Killshot and Siniestro
de la Muerte def. Joey Ryan and The Crew For Ancient Aztec Medallions

The whole "we're rivals but we'll work together tonight to fight for a common cause" has been done to death in Lucha Underground. It has grown tiresome to an extent, but they still find ways to make keep it interesting. The crowd likely isn't aware of Ryan and Cortez being undercover cops, so it was surprising their partner Mr. Cisco was the star of the match. But good for him. It was weird to see Killshot and The Moth coexisting at the end, but I assume they implode in the Gift of the Gods match.

Sexy Star and Mariposa def. Ivelisse and Taya For Ancient Aztec Medallions

Killshot and The Moth teaming up was one thing, but Sexy Star and Mariposa? Come on. Their rivalry was on an entirely different level, to the point where Sexy Star was scarred in storyline from what Mariposa did to her for months on end. And they teamed together like their "No Mas" match never happened? I'm sorry, but that took away from this match for me. It wasn't even that entertaining of a tag team match to be honest, though I give all four women credit for putting forth a strong effort. Ivelisse and Taya is another logical addition to Ultima Lucha 2 and that should be fantastic.

Prince Puma Challenged Rey Mysterio to a Match at Ultima Lucha 2

Why wasn't this advertised in advance? It's been almost two years and we haven't heard from Puma at all in Lucha Underground until now. That said, it might have been for the better because this was a disappointing segment. His voice doesn't match his presence whatsoever. No wonder they haven't had him speak. His delivery wasn't very good, either, and oddly enough, that Mysterio carried him toward the end. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely excited for their match at Ultima Lucha 2, but this came off as anticlimactic.

Overall Show

This was one of the most missable editions of Lucha Underground in some time. Each of the Ancient Aztec Medallion matches were decent at best, not to mention we already saw several of them earlier in the season. The show could have been saved by the closing segment, but even that was underwhelming. At any rate, Ultima Lucha 2 is shaping up to be a strong show that I am anxiously anticipating.
