Lucha Underground Review - June 8, 2016

Marty "The Moth" Martinez vs. Killshot Ended in a Double Count-out

Well, this really wasn't much of a match because it barely got started before both competitors got themselves counted out by brawling on the outside, but I can't say I was disappointed. Not because I don't want to see them have another match, but I'm glad we received more storyline progression from them instead. Is The Moth obsessed with the dog tags because he has an emotional attachment to them as well, or as Matt Striker said, does he just want them because that's what crazy people do? I suppose we'll find out more in due time, but this was fine for what it was. My only gripe with this was how Killshot didn't chase after The Moth after he left the ring. It was like there was a force field separating the two at the end. Strange yet not completely out of the ordinary for wrestling.

Drago and Aerostar def. Trios Champions Jack Evans and PJ Black in a Nunchucks Match

I was digging this feud when it first started a few months ago, but they took some time away from it to establish Evans and Black as a cohesive unit. That said, the rivalry didn't seem to lose any steam whatsoever as they immediately clicked as opponents and produced a great match. I was slightly skeptical about the silly stipulation, but they more than made the most of it and turned the gimmick into a brutal bout. This might be a stupid question, but were they actually hitting each other with those nunchucks? I don't know how you fake that, and those shots looked vicious. Either way, the temple ate it up.

Trio Champion Johnny Mundo, Fenix, Ivelisse, King Cuerno, Taya and Pentagon Jr. def. Prince Puma, The Mack, Texano, Sexy Star, Son of Havoc and Rey Mysterio to Advance to the Six to Survive Match

Multi-person matches can typically be train wrecks, but you never have to worry about that being the case in Lucha Underground. These 12 competitors worked incredibly well together and put together a very fun match. Everyone took their time hitting their signature spots in the final few minutes, so it came off as choreographed as a result, but that's merely nitpicking. You had to know Pentagon's team was winning based off how he was a major focus beforehand, but the predictability surrounding the outcome didn't take away from my enjoyment of the match whatsoever. Besides, the right team went over because next week's Six to Survive match now won't feature solely babyfaces.

Overall Show

I don't think any of these matches were advertised in advance, which was surprising and unusual for Lucha Undergrund (especially when they had direct competition with NXT TakeOver: The End), but it was an entertaining episode on the whole. The Martinez vs. Killshot feud was furthered in the opener, the Nunchucks match exceeded expectations and the main event was a blast. Not to mention Pentagon Jr. is back and I couldn't be any more excited about that. I'm not exactly sure when Ultima Lucha 2 is, but the commentators alluded to it being in the near future. Other than the Lucha Underground Championship match, I have no idea what matches could be taking place at the event, but I suppose we'll find out in the coming weeks.
