Lucha Underground Champion Matanza Cueto def. Cortez Castro
Of course, Castro paled in comparison to Matanza's past opponents, but this was never meant to be an outstanding outing. Rather, for the three minutes they were given, they told a solid story with Matanza inflicting punishment on Castro on behalf of Dario Cueto, who knows he's undercover at this point. It was a glorified squash match, but Matanza "breaking" the arm of Castro again was a disturbing albeit awesome visual.
Prince Puma Challenged Mil Muetes to a Grave Consequences Match
This segment was short, sweet and exactly what it needed to be. I know people want Puma to speak more often and maybe even take off his mask, but his voice isn't intimidating whatsoever and he sounds like prepubescent teenager. Thankfully, his promo was straight to the point in challenging Muertes to a Grave Consequences match, which should be excellent if the last two were any indication. Their subsequent brawl was also well done.
Son of Havoc def. Dr. Wagner, Jr.
I still don't know much about Wagner as a character, but the guy is a great wrestler and he and Havoc worked very well against each other. They contested a fun match and it was nice to know something was at stake, so there was a reason to remain invested. With Havoc's win, Mascarita Sagrada chose to face Famous B in a Believers Backlash match next week, which I believe we haven't seen since the first Ultima Lucha. That should be a blast.
Rey Mysterio def. Chavo Guerrero in a No Disqualification Loser Leaves Lucha Match
While I have never cared much about Chavo, I'm glad he went out following a feud with easily his greatest rival, Rey Mysterio. They didn't contest the same quality of match they were capable of producing a decade ago, but I still loved the drama here after the false finish (which was brilliant) and then Chavo targeting Mysterio's beat up knee shortly thereafter. Hopefully this means the end of Chavo in Lucha Underground once and for all, as this was a fitting sendoff for him.
You can always count on Lucha Underground for an entertaining hour of wrestling and this did not disappoint. The newsworthy main event met my expectations, the Lucha Underground title was defended in a brief bout, and two big gimmick matchups were confirmed for next week. Not to mention that we have Aztec Warfare to look forward to the week after that. Lucha Underground looks to finally be returning to its former glory.
