Sexy Star def. Night Claw, Marty "The Moth" Martinez, Siniestro de la Muerte, Daga, Mariposa and Killshot in an Elimination Match to Win the Gift of the Gods Championship
Sexy Star and Mariposa had one of the best feuds of Season 2, so it was cool for them to be involved in the same match at Ultima Lucha Dos, as well as archrivals Marty the Moth and Killshot. Night Claw was an interesting last minute addition, and the other two (Daga and Muerte) were total filler, but at least they were eliminated early on. Nevertheless, everyone held their own and had their moment to shine. While the bout was fun and there never seemed to be a dull moment, I was never compelled to see any one person win because most of the competitors have been directionless lately. Night Claw had a very impressive initial outing, so I was slightly surprised he didn't even make it until the final four. I actually liked the intergender action at the end simply because of the history and story told between Star, Marty and Mariposa and it wasn't just random wrestling. I guess Sexy Star was due a big win after all she has overcome in the past two seasons, so she was a fine winner. But I question how much of a push she will receive given the reports she has since retired from wrestling.
Mil Muetes def. King Cuerno in a Death Match
A lot like with Aztec Warfare and Grave Consequences, this match had the tough task of topping last year's Death match between Muertes and Fenix, but I'd certainly say it came close to matching it if not topping it. This rivalry wasn't quite as heated because it hasn't lasted as long, so they were at an obvious disadvantage, but the brawling was entertaining enough to make up for that. I appreciated how they took the fight all over the temple and made excellent use of the environment. Muertes didn't change much about his styles at all, yet he's really become a breakout babyface in the last few months. Cuerno had an equally awesome showing this match, and I'd argue he came out of this a bigger star than he had been the entire season. The crowbar shot at the end was anticlimactic, but the back-to-back-to-back table spots as well as the Tombstone Piledriver were a fantastic finish otherwise.
As I discussed last week, the "4 A Unique Opportunity" tournament didn't do much for me, but this was a significant improvement. That shouldn't be too shocking considering these matches had more storyline support, but at any rate, both bouts were highly enjoyable in their own way. I honestly didn't think I would care for the Gift of the Gods Championship match, but the final few minutes were very well done. The exceptional Death match, in addition to Dario Cueto's brutal murder of Cisco, made this a show well worth watching. Bring on the season finale!
