When the WWE started doing the specialty PPVs I thought Money in the Bank was the only good idea. The match type is exciting and has a stipulation that makes it good each year. When it comes to TLC, Extreme Rules and Hell in a Cell those matches weren’t meant to end feuds and great, brutal matches. The only two matches that stick out from any of these concept PPVs was The Shield vs. Team Hell No & Ryback at TLC 2012 and the Triple Threat Tag Team Titles match at TLC 2015.
Since debuting in 2009, there hasn’t been one match that they really needed the Hell in a Cell stipulation at the PPV and the match has been pretty much worthless since the company went PG. The blood and barbaric use of the structure was what made it good but in recent memory it has been bad. The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar is the only one from last year that the match was good but the stipulation wasn’t necessary.
This year the three matches is overused and this is coming from someone who will be in attendance. Rollins and Owens has been underwhelming and Jericho will definitely interfere, Reigns and Rusev has been good but doesn’t need the cell and Charlotte & Sasha they are just doing it to cash in on the “first ever” aspect of a Women’s Hell in a Cell. None of these matches should have the stipulation but it's October so it’s time for Hell in a Cell. If anything it should be Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte in a Ladder match since they have both been trading wins, Rusev vs. Reigns in an Extreme Rules match and Owens vs. Rollins in a Steel Cage with Chris Jericho banned from ringside.
The Hell in a Cell has been a concept that has suffered during the PG Era due to the concept being overused and no feuds really deserving the concept. If the WWE was smart they would only bring back the concept when needed and not make it a yearly PPV. They should discontinue all stipulation based PPVs besides Money in the Bank and only use the concepts when needed.
The only aspect of this year’s Hell in a Cell is that Banks & Charlotte are the main event but I think a Ladder match works better then Hell in a Cell in this feud.
