Humberto Carrillo def. TJP
Sometimes I forget TJP is still on the roster, which is sad considering he won the Cruiserweight Classic two and a half years ago. He's a talented competitor, but nothing about him interests me at this point. That said, he was the perfect person for Carrillo to take on, because not only was it an enjoyable outing, Carrillo was also able to beat the first WWE Cruiserweight Champion and score some credibility in the process.
Ariya Daivari def. Johnny Lyons
Daivari is one of those guys I don't think I will ever truly care about or fully invest in as a character, but I have to give 205 Live credit for trying to build him up as a legitimate threat the best they can. He made quick work of Lyons and went over in decisive fashion. I have no desire to see him contend for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship at WrestleMania 35, so here's hoping that isn't where this is going.
Cedric Alexander def. Mike Kanellis
I'd say Kanellis has been down on his luck lately, but really, he's been a loser ever since he signed with WWE two years ago. He has has won only a handful of matches in that time, and although he came close here, he ultimately fell short of victory. That said, this was easily his best in-ring performance in WWE to date. He and Alexander worked very well together and produced a hard-hitting, entertaining affair. The energy from the commentators was great, too. Alexander was due a victory coming off his recent losses to Akira Tozawa and Hideo Itami, though I don't see him facing Buddy Murphy again at 'Mania, either.
At the start of the show, Drake Maverick announced that a tournament will kick off next week to determine who will vie for Murphy's title at WrestleMania, and thus all three of these matches were important in building momentum. Alexander vs. Kanellis was an unexpected treat, Carrillo vs. TJP was well-wrestled, and Daivari's short and sweet squash match was exactly what it needed to be. The quarterfinals of the tourney will feature Kalisto vs. Tony Nese and The Brian Kendrick vs. Drew Gulak.
