Oney Lorcan def. Tehuti Miles
Miles scored an upset victory over Danny Burch on last week's 205 Live, so Lorcan was out for vengeance here. Miles has a good presence but is a work in progress in the ring. Thankfully, he'll learn a lot from wrestling guys like Lorcan and Burch. He had a solid showing once again here, but the match itself really wasn't anything special. Lorcan beating Miles makes me wonder whether Miles' mini-push is already over or if the feud will continue.
Isiah "Swerve" Scott def. Jack Gallagher
Scott's ongoing rivalry with Gallagher and Tony Nese over the last month has made for some fun matches on 205 Live and NXT. This was another quality contest from them as their clash of styles continues to be a blast. While I wish WWE would do more with Gallagher, Scott is a bigger priority at the moment and him winning was the right call. My only nitpick of this thing was that it ended on a roll-up, the same as the opener.
El Hijo del Fantasma def. Drake Maverick to Win the Vacant NXT Cruiserweight Championship
(This is from my review of Wednesday's episode of NXT.) There was no mention of this being for the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Championship. Rather, Fantasma was announced as the new NXT Cruiserweight Champion, so perhaps the whole "interim" concept was dropped because they don't expect Jordan Devlin to be back any time soon. Despite that, this was an excellent match with strong showings from both men. Fantasma is just fantastic while Maverick was the ultimate underdog with the story he was telling coming into the finals of this tournament. The finish played out exactly as I expected it to, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I thought Fantasma would reveal himself as the leader of the masked men who have been popping up and kidnapping people lately, but I assume that's still coming eventually. Fantasma becoming the champion was the right call and it's nice to see WWE offered Maverick a new contract. It's going to be a polarizing decision because it begs the question of why the company doesn't just rehire everyone that was released back in April and it's a strange situation, but I'm happy for him.
205 Live ran a little longer than usual this week due to the main event from NXT being replayed in its entirety, which I had no issue with because it involved the NXT Cruiserweight Championship and was a great match. Hopefully Fantasma will make more appearances on 205 Live going forward. I appreciate that the show is developing more storylines, even if they aren't all that exciting. Miles is a fresh face and is getting more television time while feuding with Lorcan and Burch, and I've enjoyed Scott's matches with Gallagher and Nese. It's nice that 205 Live is giving guys a platform to showcase their skills and produce well-wrestled matches, which is an improvement over running "best of" shows like they were doing a month or so ago.
