Los Matadores def. Gold and Stardust
Why are Los Matadores still getting wins over Gold and Stardust? Unless they're building toward a split for the face painted duo (which I would absolutely be in favor of), I don't see what purpose any of this serves. How do they expect the fans to take them seriously against The Usos if they're always losing to Los Matadores? The match itself wasn't bad, but these fluke wins for Los Matadores aren't doing anyone any favors.
The Ascension def. Local Athletes
As noted in my Raw review, we've been seeing this same match for weeks, so this was nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, longtime viewers of NXT have been seeing this for the last two years. While I'm ready for them to move into a feud with The Usos over the WWE Tag Team Championship, I can understand them waiting on that if they plan to do it at WrestleMania. Meanwhile, why is JBL burying the team on commentary? Isn't he supposed to be the heel announcer?
United States Champion Rusev def. Justin Gabriel (Non-title)
Not that anyone cares, of course, but it was odd to see Gabriel going up against Rusev after he was positioned as a heel in the Lumberjack match on Raw. Great consistency, WWE. This was your basic squash match and nothing more. Rusev is killing time before the Royal Rumble now that Ryback is out of the picture for the time being, and I really like how he's been perceived as a threat in the Rumble. He's been undefeated for the last year in WWE, so there's no reason why he shouldn't be a major candidate to win in storyline.
The New Day def. Adam Rose, Tyson Kidd and Cesaro
This was The New Day's best match to date and it's not even close. As stupid as a gimmick as it is, every member of The New Day are excellent athletes and this match was pure proof of that. They had an entertaining exchange with Cesaro and Kidd and even Rose managed to hold his own. I was pleasantly surprised to see them get as much time as they did and it made for a fun main event to close out the show.
Most of this show was complete throwaway with the forgettable tag team match and two squash matches, but the main event was very enjoyable and worth going out of way to see. It's nothing too great, but it made the show feel worthwhile. On the whole, it was a decent show, but nothing that altered my excitement for the Royal Rumble, which is what they should really be focused on right now. There will be no Main Event coverage next week due to it being preempted by "contractual issues" from SkySports.
