WWE Main Event Review - July 12, 2016

Picture
By Graham "GSM" Matthews

Jack Swagger, Apollo Crews and The Golden Truth def. The Ascension and The Vaudevillians

As random as this match was, I can't fault them for it simply because it was something out of the ordinary and I appreciate anything that is different on this program as compared to the same old tired matchups. There were a few sloppy spots here and there throughout, but it was a fine opening eight-man tag all things considered. My only gripe with it was that Crews wasn't more showcased than he was. On a side note, David Otunga saying Swagger would be a top pick in the upcoming draft was pretty comical.

Becky Lynch def. Alicia Fox

Did anyone honestly know Fox was even gone? Nothing against her, but she has been such a non-factor in the women's division for years that sometimes I forget she's on the roster. If nothing else, she isn't an awful athlete and can have passable matches with the right opponents, and that was the case with Lynch here as she carried her to a competent contest. More importantly, Lynch's feud with Natalya was well-furthered with Natalya on commentary, which is rare for a show such as Main Event.

Sheamus def. Titus O'Neil

Sheamus is a solid wrestler and all, but I couldn't care less about the guy in 2016. I realize that as a former WWE Championship he needs wins every now and again, but I sigh when they come at the expense of rising stars with potential including Zack Ryder and O'Neil. The crowd was unusually quiet for O'Neil's offense, and the match abruptly ended with Sheamus hitting his finisher out of nowhere, so this was a miss of a match for me.

Cesaro and The Usos def. Alberto Del Rio and The Dudley Boyz

Unlike the opener, at least this match had some storyline significance with Cesaro and Del Rio currently feuding. Meanwhile, The Usos and The Dudley Boyz are beyond directionless right now and I hope that changes after the Draft. They put together a solid tag team match with the time they were allotted and I was glad Cesaro was the major focal point of the matchup.

Overall Show

It couldn't be more obvious that WWE is spinning its wheels right now before the Draft changes up the landscape of the roster next week. That isn't to say this was a bad show, however, as each match was decent and the in-ring action on the whole was average. It isn't must see by any means, but the two multi-man tag team matches were a refreshing change of pace.
