By Abiel Tesfamariam Exactly thirty years ago a very important event change the course of pro wrestling. Many people overlook this event. I think it would be blasphemy to ignore this event. This is what happened over 30 years ago today. Thirty years ago the Rock N’ Wrestling connection changed the course of professional wrestling. This first started when Captain Lou Albano when he met singer Cyndi Laupher. They were the ones who formed this idea when they first met on a plane to Puerto Rico. Vince McMahon had booked the both of them on Roddy Piper’s talk show “Piper’s Pit.” Lou called Cyndi a broad and she struck back by hitting him her purse. She ended up challenging him to a match where both would pick the wrestler of their choice. Cyndi chose Wendi Richter and Lou Albano picked Ladies Champion The Fabulous Moolah. This match was scheduled on July 23, 1984 on MTV’s “The Brawl to End It All.” At this event Wendi made history by officially dethroning the longest reigning champion of all time, The Fabulous Moolah (She held it for 28 years). Not only did Wendi beat Moolah for the champion, but MTV garnered its highest ratings at that point. That was considered the birth Rock N’ Wrestling connection. This transformed the WWE into a pop culture phenomenon that has made so many stars and memories in history.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews Seth Rollins def. Fandango This was an odd match on paper and I'm still struggling to figure out why it even happened outside of giving Fandango a quick and easy win. I've been saying for weeks that Fandango was being portrayed as the babyface in his feud with Summer Rae and Layla, so could this have solidified his turn? Then again, this wouldn't have been the first time WWE has done a heel vs. heel match, so Fandango might not be turning at all. Either way, the crowd was surprisingly into the action despite not taking sides. If nothing else, I was extremely glad that Summer and Layla didn't make an appearance here. After losing to Zack Ryder on Raw, did anyone honestly expect Fandango to win against Rollins? Ryback def. WWE Tag Team Champion Jey Uso The Usos are ten times more exciting in tag team action than they are in singles competition, so I knew from the get-go that I wouldn't care about this match from the moment it started. There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with it, but it failed to spark my interest. Does this set up Rybaxel for another shot at the WWE Tag Team Championships? The most intriguing aspect of Ryback's matches continues to be the return of his "Feed Me More" chant. Is it making an official comeback? I, for one, surely hope so. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Triple H Addressed the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Oh, a member of The Authority kicked off Raw? I would've never guessed. In all seriousness, this was a logical follow-up to the conclusion of Battleground and an effective way of hyping the main event segment. The teasing of tension between Randy Orton and Kane has grown tiresome since I don't think anyone really cares about either guy as HHH's lackeys at the moment. Roman Reigns was over with the fans with his promo and this segment served as a nice tie-in to the subsequent Handicap matchup. Roman Reigns def. Randy Orton and Kane in a 2-on-1 Handicap Match The match was nothing special, but the sole purpose it served was to further tease dissension between Orton and Kane. Again, fans have zero incentive to care about either guy right now, so the idea of the two feuding is boring to most. Sure, Reigns overcame the odds and scored a big win, but the outcome of the bout was heavily foreshadowed. I'd like to see Reigns vs. Triple H at SummerSlam, but it's looking more and more like Reigns will be facing Orton at the event instead. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Adam Rose def. Fandango (Kickoff Match) I didn't expect much of a match between these two going in since I figured Layla and Summer Rae being at ringside meant that shenanigans would ensue. That said, I wasn't disappointed that the match was all of a few minutes long, but it does leave me wondering why the match was even added to the pre-show to begin with. WWE Creative has obviously lost all faith in the Rose character at this point, but I presume it was better for him to win a match of his own instead of being overshadowed in the Battle Royal later in the night. My thoughts on the Fandango love triangle are pretty well-documented, so I won't repeat them here. Cameron def. Naomi (Kickoff Match) Cameron may not be the best worker, but I at least give her and Naomi credit for having a reason to face each other. Their split was well built and it wasn't another Kickoff match that served no purpose (see: Rose vs. Fandango). It wasn't a technical masterpiece, but Naomi carried Cameron for most of it, making it a passable contest. I didn't expect Cameron to pick up the win, bu the fact it came via disqualification gives Cameron good heat and keeps the feud alive for another few weeks. |
