By Graham "GSM" Matthews Chris Jericho Interrupted Shawn Michaels It's funny that Jericho wouldn't officially turn heel for another two months, yet he was still getting vehemently booed whenever he was in the ring chastising Michaels. This was an exceptional encounter between them that served as as a small taste of what they were capable of producing together down the line when they feuded. Speaking of Jericho, what was his role in all of this anyway? I guess he was the one who stirred the pot between Batista and Michaels, but did that justify him being named the special guest referee for their Backlash match? Either way, unlike most talking segments that typically open Raw, this held my interest the entire time. Santino Marella and Carlito def. Paul London and Brian Kendrick in a No. 1 Contender's Match For the World Tag Team Championship Marella and Carlito were mostly a makeshift tag team given WWE had zero idea what else to do with the duo at that time, but hey, you can't complain about them having chemistry together as teammates. London and Kendrick can always be counted on for a fun match and that's exactly what this was, but Marella and Carlito were fresher faces in the title picture, so I was glad they won. Plus, the tag team champions Cody Rhodes and Hardcore Holly were babyfaces anyway, so them winning made sense. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Apollo Crews def. Tyler Breeze I'd complain about Crews being directionless, but that'd merely be me beating a dead horse at this point, so I'll just focus on the match. These two contested a pretty good match at last year's NXT TakeOver: Respect special almost exactly one year ago and it seems their in-ring chemistry has only improved over time. I really liked how Breeze flew solo here because it allowed him to showcase his skills and prove to those in the back he can hang on his own. They told a solid story with Breeze working over Crews' injured knee and it was an entertaining affair on the whole. Kane def. Baron Corbin by Disqualification I was honestly shocked when I heard that they were blowing off this first time ever encounter on Main Event. It isn't a money match by any means, but they have been teasing it from time to time over the past month. And they still could go back to it if they want given this match ended in a non-finish. It was just weird seeing a Main Event match conclude in a disqualification seeing as how that rarely happens on this program nowadays. Regardless, this match was exactly what you'd expect it to be with a ton of punching, kicking and rest holds, so I assume we'll be seeing more of that on SmackDown Live soon. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Triple H Interrupted Mr. McMahon This was a solid follow-up to the events that transpired at No Mercy the night prior with Triple H and Randy Orton trading the WWE Championship back and forth. In case you missed my recent reviews of Raw from this time period, HHH and McMahon had been embroiled in a rivalry for weeks, so it was only logical for McMahon to grant HHH his championship rematch only to make it a Handicap match, setting up the night's main event nicely. Candice Michelle, Mickie James and Maria def. Women's Champion Beth Phoenix, Melina and Jillian Hall This match made sense of the random matches Mickie was involved in at various points during this time period. Maria was still relatively green in the ring, so keeping her limited in a six-Diva tag team match was wise. It was a surprisingly pleasant match that wasn't the train wreck it could have been, also successfully moving along the feud between Michelle and Phoenix coming off their clash at No Mercy. |
