By Graham "GSM" Matthews Mr. McMahon Addressed the Troops It's only fitting that the Chairman of WWE kicked off the annual event and express his gratitude to the troops, regardless of whether his on-air character was a heel or a babyface at the time (I honestly can't remember). Say what you will about the man being "out of touch" or what have you, but he really does go above and beyond in giving back to the troops with these shows and going overseas when they aren't obligated to. Granted, they no longer go overseas for the event and instead travel to bases here in the United States, but it might be because there's no longer as large of a presence over there as there once was. Either way, it's always an enjoyable event and this was a heartwarming promo from McMahon to start the show. World Tag Team Champion Big Show def. Carlito In addition to being hilarious, Carlito was was such a slimy character that he was the perfect choice to go one-on-one with Big Show because he could escape all of his offense. He did that for a portion of this match, but Show mostly squashed Carlito, which was fine because the crowd got a kick out of it. These two would later enter a feud over the World Tag Team Championship going into WrestleMania 22.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day def. The Lucha Dragons We've seen these two teams face off countless times in the past few months, and while this match wasn't anything out of the ordinary from them, it was still an enjoyable affair. I figured New Day would win, but there was some doubt considering SmackDown is headed to USA Network soon and they might have wanted to do a title change to surprise viewers. New Day came out on top only after interference from Xavier Woods at ringside, so the Dragons were protected in defeat. New Day are the hottest thing going in WWE today, so there's no reason to take the titles off them in the foreseeable future. The Wyatt Family def. The Dudley Boyz, Ryback and Kane I rolled my eyes when The Dudley Boyz, Ryback and Kane were announced as The Wyatt Family's opponents because it was essentially the same match we saw on Raw except with Ryback replacing Tommy Dreamer. That said, it turned into quite the treat. It might have gone longer than it needed to, but the chaos that ensued down the stretch was fun. As I said on Monday, I'm glad The Wyatt Family are building momentum, but it's coming at the expense of The Dudley Boyz. By John Napolitano “You sit there, and you thump your bible. And you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere. Talk about your psalms; talk about John 3:16. Austin 3:16 says, ‘I just whipped your ass!’” This King of the Ring “acceptance speech” from “Stone Cold” Steve Austin in June of 1996 was all it took to catapult the young Texan into superstardom. Concise, deliberate, and attitudinal, this promo will go down in WWE history, as the first step of a long, historic journey, but why was the birth of Austin 3:16 so hugely successful in launching “Stone Cold’s” legendary career? Factoring out the shock value of spewing such vile verbiage in the family-friendliest era of WWE and the unprecedented character that was and is “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Austin accomplished something that few current WWE Superstars can seem to deliver. By Graham "GSM" Matthews Tyler Breeze def. Goldust As I mentioned in my SmackDown review from last week, I both like and dislike the idea of a Breeze vs. Goldust feud. On one hand, it should make for some hilarious backstage segments as seen last week. On the other hand, I highly doubt it will get Breeze where he needs to be. It would have been one thing if they had a program when Breeze first arrived on the scene, but coming off his various losses to Dolph Ziggler, this feud likely won't do him many favors. At any rate, they contested a fun little match with some entertaining antics from both men mixed in, so at least the bout was enjoyable. Bo Dallas def. Fandango You could tell solely from the crowd reaction to this match how little the fans care about both of these guys right now. Fandango is just toiling away and phoning it in with every performance while Dallas is... well, there. It wasn't a bad match by any means and it had its moments, but when Dallas hit his finisher to crickets, that's when it became apparent this match was a dud. |
