Lucha Underground Review - May 13, 2015

Picture
By Graham "GSM" Matthews

Aerostar def. Jack Evans

An issue that incoming Lucha Underground talent commonly face is they don't establish themselves as a babyface or a heel from the start. Despite his babyface moveset, Evans did an effective job of coming off like a heel in this match with his mannerisms. He's an incredible athlete, and he and Aerostar worked very well together. And what a crazy finish! That piledriver off the top rope was cringe-worthy, but if spots like that are few and few between, I have no problem with it. Hopefully this isn't the last we see of these two against each other.

Fenix def. Sexy Star, Killshot, The Mack, Cage, King Cuerno and Pentagon Jr. in a Seven-Way Ancient Aztec Medallion Match

Multi-man matches are usually trainwrecks, and while this one was no exception, I say that in the best way possible. Everyone shined at one point or another and put together an incredibly fun matchup. Just think when you've seen it all in Lucha Underground, you get a match like this where all the competitions incorporate crazy, innovative spots (Pentagon's double-team maneuver on Sexy Star and Fenix was my personal favorite). Fenix getting the win was cool to see as he has cooled off significantly since his feud with Mil Muertes wrapped up. It wasn't made clear what the medallions will lead to, but they have me intrigued.

Hernandez def. Alberto El Patron in a No Disqualification No. 1 Contender's Match for the Lucha Underground Championship

Patron and Hernandez had the tough task of topping the previous two matches, but it wasn't a bad match at all. Hernandez can have a solid match when in the ring with the right opponent and Del Rio got a decent bout out of him. It wasn't given much time at all, but that might have been for the better. Of course, the highlight of the match was the apparent heel turn by Johnny Mundo who proceeded to toss Patron through a window at ringside. I thought the roles would have been reversed, but Patron seems to be comfortable in the babyface role for now, so turning Mundo will at least be something new. It was quite the cliffhanger going into next week.

Overall Show

I realize I say this every week, but you must go out of your way to watch this show, especially if you're not already regularly doing so. You don't need to be following the product over the last few months (though it helps) in order to enjoy this episode. The first two matches were nothing short of sensational, and the main event featured a huge moment with the Mundo heel turn. If there's any episode of Lucha Underground to start with, it's definitely this one.
