By Graham "GSM" Matthews Austin Aries def. Sonjay Dutt and Chris Sabin in a Triple Threat Match This match looked a lot better on paper and unfortunately didn't live up to its full potential. All three competitors are great workers, but the bout was poorly executed. Dutt transitioning from face to heel mid-match was strange, and thus the live crowd didn't know how to react. There were some entertaining antics in the match, but there wasn't enough focus on the actual wrestling. The ending came prematurely and left a sour taste in the mouth of this viewer, leaving me thinking what this could have been had they not goofed around so much. Comedy in wrestling is fun to an extent, but not when it is overdone. Ethan Carter III def. Dewey Barnes This is one "rivalry" I did not wish to relive on this show. Carter cut an effective heel promo prior to the bout to garner some nice heat, but the match itself was a complete squash as expected. I don't mind an occasional squash match, but the fact EC3 has faced the same two people (Norv Fernum and Barnes) over and over again bores me to tears. However, I shouldn't have expected any differently given that this is a pay-per-view that was taped at the end of December when he was still directionless.

By Graham "GSM" Matthews Fifteen years ago yesterday, Big Show (or Paul Wight at the time) make his shocking WWE/F debut at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre pay-per-view, tossing Stone Cold Steve Austin through a steel cage wall. He would go on to have one of the most decorated careers in WWE history, winning every major singles champion the company has had to offer and etching his name into the history books. From headlining WrestleMania to beating the best of the best, Show has seemingly done it all during his time with the company. Having said all that, is it time for Big Show to hang up his boots for good? Any time I ponder this question, I am often met with the answer from some people, "Big Show is an attraction." I couldn't agree more. He is indeed an attraction. Some would say he is this generation's version of Andre the Giant. If you were to ask any non-wrestling fan who Big Show is, they might just tell you. He hasn't been in the media outside of the ring with the exception of a few movies here and there, but he is still very well-known. However, is it really a "draw" at this point in his career? He hasn't been booked consistently in years and he lost all his luster many years ago. No matter how cool it may be to see Big Show up close and in person at a live event or what have you (the TV doesn't do him justice), I just don't see what value he has left to WWE. By Graham "GSM" Matthews The Shield def. Daniel Bryan, Sheamus and Christian Bryan, Sheamus and Christian are a trio comprised of three great wrestlers that meshed well with The Shield. It was a very solid match with the expected exciting finish. Sheamus accidentally hitting Christian with the Brogue Kick was a nice touch that helped hype the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and create tension between the two. It was also another nice win for The Shield, who are riding a wave of momentum going into their match with The Wyatt Family at the pending pay-per-view. Jack Swagger def. Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio and Mark Henry in a Fatal-4 Way No. 1 Contender's Match for the Intercontinental Championship The midcard has been basically nonexistent for quite some time now, but it was nice to see the Intercontinental Championship receive some love (no pun intended) on this show. It was somewhat obvious that Swagger was emerging victorious based on how it was set up and the fact he was the only heel, but there were several points during the bout where I was doubting myself. Sure, there was some slow parts, but everyone put forth a great effort and delivered a fun finishing sequence that gave Swagger a good win. By Graham "GSM" Matthews MVP Interrupted TNA World Heavyweight Champion Magnus Seeing the show kick off with Dixie Carter and her lackeys is never an encouraging, but I'll make a a rare exception with Magnus being from England. He did a good job of turning the live crowd against him, but everything else about this segment didn't do much for me. MVP was fine in his role and the segment was a nice setup into the subsequent match, but Carter is so deplorable as a character that drags everything she is involved in down. Ethan Carter III vs. Gunner For the Feast or Fired Briefcases Went to a No Contest The match was only mere minutes long before it ended due to interference, so it never really got out of first gear. The EC3 character is slowly growing on me, but I still couldn't care less for Gunner, who I just can't see as a top star right now. That being said, this match didn't interest me in the slightest, and the idea of once again putting the Feast or Fired briefcases up for grabs was just plain stupid. |
